Marske United Football Club: Northern League Division 2 2010/2011 Season

Match Report:

Washington (Away) | Wednesday 11th August 2010 7.30pm | Northern League Div 2 | Result 2 - 0 (Lost)

Marske travelled to the extremely impressive Nissan Sports Complex to take on Washington, hoping to grab their first three points of the new season.  With Paul Burton on holiday, assistant manager Mark Riley put his 100% record on the line, and made two changes to the side that drew at home to Hebburn on the opening day.

Micky Dalton replaced Andy Swalwell in midfield, and Derek Bradley came in for the injured Anthony Roberts, with Josh Myers dropping back into defence.

Marske made a bright start to the game, despite Dean Fox having the first shot at goal from long distance.

Anthony Ormerod was put into a good position in the box but couldn’t find a shot, then Dom Gamble whipped in a great cross from the left flank but there was nobody in the middle to get on the end of it.

With eight minutes gone, Washington made the most of the vacant space on the wing and Glenn Reay cut inside and found Nicky Martin who scuffed his first time shot at goal.

The game was slightly marred by a strong wind, with the next proper chance not coming until the 27th minute when Rob Jones drew in a foul five yards outside the penalty area.  Danny Brunskill blasted the free kick into the wall, but Jones reacted quickly to win the ball on the byline and instead of crossing, tried to take on a defender at the edge of the six yard box as the move fizzled out.

Derek Bradley then moved out onto the left hand side and Marske started to show some promise.

On 31 minutes Gamble sent him away down the flank and he battled past two defenders before being hacked down just outside the box, Alan Oliver lucky to escape without a yellow card.

From the resulting free kick, Washington broke straight down the other end and won a soft penalty following a shove in the back from Mark Taylor.  Glenn Reay slotted home the opening goal from the spot.

Marske came close to an equaliser from a free kick on 37 minutes.  Oliver just managed to beat Micky Dalton to Bradley’s centre, and headed the ball over the bar for a corner.

Half-time:  Washington 1v0 Marske United

As Josh Myers hobbled off at half-time, Rilo made a controversial decision to replace him at right-back with left footed Mitchell Morris, when Andy Raw was also available on the bench,

Jones had a lively start to the second period.  He drew David Lee into a badly timed tackle that earned him a yellow card, but Morris’ free kick was poor to say the least.  Then a minute later Jones set up Brunskill to shoot, his curling shot going narrowly over from the edge of the box.

Washington broke quickly down the right hand side on 62 minutes and supplied a good deep cross into the box.  Fox arrived unmarked on the corner of the six yard box but couldn’t beat Danny Dixon with his header.

A long punt forward on 68 minutes from the Washington defence, fortuitously found Martin who managed to get goal side of Lee Donachie, but Dixon was quick off his line to block his shot from ten yards out.

Marske had a golden opportunity to equalise with 15 minutes left.  Jones played in Dalton who hit a low shot wide of the mark with just keeper Danny Molyneaux to slip it round.  His blushes were spared when he turned back to see the linesman had raised his flag for offside.

Two minutes later Molyneux made his first save of the game in the Washington goal when Brunskill hit a shot on the turn from just inside the box that lacked power.

Washington should have made it 2-0 on 84 minutes as both of their substitutes combined from a free kick.  John Harrison set up Tim Bowman in the box, but he put his first touch under Dixon and just wide of the post.

Washington made sure of the points with four minutes to go following a Marske free kick from the left byline at United’s own end.  The ball was passed back to keeper Dixon whose poor clearance went straight to Martin, and with only the keeper in front of him, he couldn’t miss.
