Jarrow Roofing (Away): Northern League Division 1: Saturday 21st January 2012

Result: Jarrow Roofing 0  Marske United 3   Scorers: Charlton, Donachie, Brunskill

Marske travelled to Boldon knowing that a win against Roofing would lift them 16 points above the relegation zone and virtually guarantee survival in the first division.

Manager Paul Burton made two changes from the starting eleven of our last league game against Tow Law Town three weeks earlier.  Lee Donachie replaced Anthony Roberts at right full back, and surprisingly Anthony Ormerod was preferred to the in-form Adam Gell in the centre of midfield.

Playing into a strong wind that blew from goal to goal, the Roofers made a good start in the opening few minutes.  After Leon Carling sliced Chris Scott’s right wing cross just wide, Tommy Marron hit his own crossbar from the resulting corner.

Marske should have taken the lead after five minutes when Danny Brunskill brought down Benn Thompson’s header forward and quickly played in Karl Charlton who with just Thomas Courtney to beat fired a low shot wide from the edge of the box.

Less than a minute later Charlton again had a chance to open the scoring in the box but hit a fresh air shot when well positioned.

Charlton then twice went close to converting two crosses that whizzed narrowly beyond the far post as the home side really struggled to deal with the strong wind.

United had Roofing pinned back in the own half for the majority of the first 45 minutes, but Jarrow always looked dangerous on the break with Aristote Guierin-Lokonga looking particularly lively with the ball at his feet.

Despite Marske’s dominance, it looked likely that the first half would end goalless until a minute before the break when Lee Donachie’s throw in was crossed to the far post by Chris McGill and Charlton just manged to slide in and volley the ball into the roof of the net to give Marske the lead.

Half-time:  Jarrow Roofing 0 v 1 Marske United

Marske went close to doubling their lead in the first minute of the second half when Brunskill played the ball wide to Charlton on the left whose cross got caught in the wind and clipped the corner of the crossbar, with Courtney just getting to the rebound ahead of Thompson.

Jarrow went close to equalising on 49 minutes when Guerin-Lokonga held the ball up on the byline and centred across the face of goal, but between them Carling and Mark Taylor somehow managed to keep the ball out.

Marske got to grips with playing against the strong wind far better than Roofing did in the first half and put the game out of Jarrow’s reach with two goals in a rampant six minute spell.

On 65 minutes Courtney gave away a cheap free kick by picking up a back-pass from Kevin Davison inside his bow, and from the centre of the box Charlton teed up Donachie to rifle the ball straight into the top right hand corner to register his first ever goal for the club.

With 20 minutes left Marske put the game to bed with a fine team effort.  McGill brought the ball down out of the air perfectly and played an easy ball wide to Ormerod whose cross into the penalty area was chested into the path of Brunskill by Thompson.  The big striker took a touch with his right before slipping the ball past Courtney with his left to make it 3-0.

Marske keeper Graeme Willey had had very little to do in the game so far, but saved superbly when called upon after 78 minutes when Scott fired towards goal from the left hand corner of the six yard box.

Gell replaced Marron and Jonathan Burton came on for Charlton for the final ten minutes as Marske did their best to frustrate Jarrow by playing keep ball.

Derek Bradley replaced Thompson with two minutes left and almost added a fourth goal in the final minute but his goalbound shot took a deflection off of Davison for a corner.

Full-time:  Jarrow Roofing 0 v 3 Marske United

A well deserved three points lifts Marske 16 points clear of third bottom Jarrow Roofing who now face a massive task to avoid the drop back to the second division.
