Jarrow Roofing (Home): Northern League Division 1: Saturday 3rd December 2011

Result: Marske United 4 Jarrow Roofing 0    Scorers: Thompson (2), Charlton, Brunskill

On their current form the Marske United team basically picks itself, but manager Paul Burton had to make two enforced changes from the side that came back victorious from Consett.

Having replaced the injured Andy Raw during the game at Consett, Anthony Roberts took his place at right full back, whilst the only remaining left footed player in the squad, Jonathan Burton, replaced the unavailable Adam Whatley at left back.  The remainder of the team remained unchanged.

In a frantic start to the game, Marske could have been four goals up in the first seven minutes, but had to settle for just an early 1-0 lead.

With just a minute on the clock Danny Brunskill played Adam Gell clear, but instead of trying to round the keeper, he lifted the ball up over him and also cleared the crossbar.

Marske led with five minutes gone as Derek Bradley centred from the byline on the right hand side of goal and Benn Thompson managed to bundle the ball over the line from close range.

A minute after the restart Brunskill had an effort blocked on the line, and on seven minutes Karl Charlton’s shot from ten yards out was well saved at the near post by Gary Rogers.

United doubled their lead on 15 minutes when Mark Taylor played a ball over the top and Charlton beat the offside trap to run through and fire at goal.  Rogers got his legs to the ball but there was too much power on the shot to keep it out.

Roofing’s first chance materialised on 23 minutes when Calvin McMahon crossed from the left and Aristote Guerin-Lokonga rose highest in the box to head down towards goal, but Graeme Willey pulled off a remarkable stop to deny the striker, and Mark Taylor reacted quickly to slide in and clear the rebound.

Marske added a third goal on 32 minutes when Thompson’s flick on was chased by Brunskill, who outmuscled Ian Moore to gain possession and fire towards goal from the edge of the area.  Again Rogers got his legs to the shot, but again failed to keep the effort out.

And United nearly made it 4-0 shortly before half-time when Bradley cut Charlton’s cross back into the path of Gell who sliced the ball way over the bar from 12 yards out.

Half-time:  Marske United 3 v 0 Jarrow Roofing

Marske were given an early scare at the start of the second half when Willey had to save well at the foot of his near post following a corner, but once they got back into their stride it wasn’t long before they started to carve out more goal scoring opportunities.

On 51 minutes Taylor sent Bradley away with a crossfield ball, and after making it into the opponents penalty area cut the ball back to Gell who made it a hat trick of misses as he again fired high over the bar.  Johnny Wilkinson would be proud.

On 58 minutes, the ever lively Liam Robertson attempted a cheeky chip from the right edge of the box that had Willey scrambling before palming the ball over the bar for a corner.

Chris McGill replaced Charlton after 70 minutes, and two minutes later he was involved in Marske’s fourth goal of the afternoon.  Bradley picked him out with a clever ball over the top, and after conrolling the ball well to get past his marker, returned the ball to Bradley who won a corner after his shot deflected just inches wide of the goal.  Bradley’s flag kick was headed home powerfully at the near post by Thompson, who is now within eight goals of the clubs all-time scoring record.

Despite the contest being over the visitors never gave up, and in the 80th minute Karl McMann’s cross was headed towards goal from just eight yards out but Willey again saved excellently.

Thompson looked to have completed a hat trick in the 89th minute when Gell played him in and he lobbed Rogers from 25 yards out, only for the ball to crash off the crossbar.

Jarrow were still intent on going home with a goal on the scoresheet, and Peter Kane drilled a shot at goal, but Willey was equally focused on keeping a clean sheet and pulled off yet another terrific save to keep the striker at bay.

Marske’s fourth win on the bounce lifts them to 14th in the table and puts eight points between themselves and Jarrow Roofing with the same amount of games played.
