MATCH REPORT:
Brandon United (Home): NL Div 2, 28th November
2009.
F/T 5-0 (W)
Scorers: Jackson, Thompson, Dixon, Jones,
Swallwell
We made only one
change from the team that easily saw off Hebburn
Town, Micky Waller replacing Josh Myers in the
centre of midfield, presumably due to Josh’s
upcoming suspension that will see him miss the
FA Vase game against Nelson.
We started the game
well, Benn Thompson’s aerial presence and Rob
Jones’ pace causing the Brandon defence problems
from the off and managed to grab an early goal.
Stuart Jackson had
a header parried by Ian Myers and Derek
Bradley’s shot was blocked on the line before
Jackson bundles home the rebound to score his
eighth goal of the season from defence.
Owen Dixon
controlled Jones’ clever through ball well on 10
minutes and struck a shot across Myers, but the
keeper got an arm to his goal bound shot and
Bradley missed the rebound from close range.
We doubled our lead
after 13 minutes following a good build up.
Jones again found Dixon at the right hand side
of the box and the youngster grabbed his first
ever senior goal for the club by firing low past
Myers.
It should have been
3-0 two minutes later as Bradley made an
excellent tackle on the half way line to
dispossess Matt Hornsby and sent Jones through
who played a one-two with Thompson before
forcing Myers into a save.
Jones sent a 20
yard shot towards goal on 17 minutes that was
comfortably held by Myers, and on 19 minutes we
made it 3-0.
Thompson reacted
quickly to get onto the end of a misplaced pass
across the Brandon back line and beat Myers to
the stray ball, poking it round him from just
inside the box.
We were in a greedy
mood as Dixon got into a good position to win a
corner, and after Brandon failed to clear it
properly, Dom Gamble set up Thompson who went
close with a header.
Bradley blocked an
attempted clearance from Myers on 28 minutes and
chased after the rebound, but Anthony Verity got
to the ball just in the nick of time to concede
a corner.
Thompson powered
home Andy Swalwell’s corner with a header, but
it was ruled out for a foul on the keeper.
Brandon’s first
shot of the game didn’t come until the 34th
minute as Liam Bramley hit a speculative 35 yard
shot that wasn’t far off bending out of play for
a throw in, prompting an ironic chorus of “how
wide do you want the goal!”
Bradley played a
clever pass forward for Dixon to run onto after
37 minutes, but having chipped the keeper, his
shot hit the top of the crossbar.
Two minutes later
Bradley put a long range effort wide, before
Bramley went close at the other end with another
long range attempt.
Half-time:
Marske United 3v0 Brandon United
Anthony Roberts
replaced Jackson for the start of the second
half, and it was Brandon who started the second
half better, as Steven Fothergill curled a shot
narrowly wide of the top right hand corner.
We were slow to get
going, but created a great chance after 62
minutes. Having caught Brandon on the break,
Jones played in Thompson who tried to chip Myers
but the visiting keeper got a hand to the ball.
Richie Ward forced
a great low save on the line from Myers after he
was given a free header from a 68th
minute corner, then a minute later Jones latched
onto a loose ball and exquisitely lobbed Myers
from 25 yards out to make it 4-0, despite
Brandon appealing for offside.
Marske were now
back in full control, and Thompson was replaced
by Danny Brunskill for the remaining 20 minutes.
A good move forward
saw Jones release Gamble on the left, but he
failed to shoot from a good position. Dixon got
on the end of his cross but fired high over the
bar from 15 yards.
Swalwell put the
icing on the cake with a fantastic fifth goal
for Marske. Brunskill held the ball up before
releasing Gamble down the left. Gamble got past
Verity and swung in a great cross that Swalwell
met with a full length diving header from 12
yards that gave Myers no chance.
Poor play from our
corner on 86 minutes allowed Fothergill to break
away down the left but his centre from the
byline was cut out by Ward, then in the final
minute, Andy Raw made a great saving tackle
after Tim Bowman managed to break away and get
into the box.
Full-time:
Marske United 5v0 Brandon United

Having created just
as many chances against Brandon at Welfare Park
yet somehow end up on the losing side, it was
nice to gain revenge with such a dominant
performance. 20 goals scored in our last five
league games has seen our goal difference move
up to +22, bettered only by leaders Sunderland
Ryhope CA.
