MATCH REPORT:
Darlington RA (Home): NL Div 2, 31st October
2009.
F/T : Win 4 - 1
Scorers: - Jones (3), Wesson
We managed to field
a strong team as Andy Raw returned to defence
and Rob Jones started up front with Craig
Skelton dropping to the bench following his
sending off at Team Northumbria.
We started
brightly, forcing Darlington onto the back foot
from the off and should have led on eight
minutes. Rob Jones beat the offside trap and
found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper John
Wray but failed to get round him.
Derek Bradley
worked his way down the left flank and into the
box after 14 minutes but failed to pull the
trigger and had his cross cleared by Mark
Wheldon.
Jones again got
through on 18 minutes but tried to do too much
when rounding Wray.
The opening goal
finally came on 21 minutes Raw’s clearance from
an RA free kick found Jones just inside the
opposition half, and this time the forward got
it right, rounding Wray before netting from a
tight angle.
We continued to
press but were shot-shy in front of goal as
Bradley, Thompson and Jones all got into good
positions.
Glenn Wesson came
close on the half hour mark with a half volley
from just outside the box, but Wray saved well
to force a corner.
Jones got through
again on 37 minutes and should have tried a
first time lob over the advancing keeper but
tried to round him and missed out on his
opportunity to score.
We came close to a
second just before half time as Benn Thompson’s
effort struck the woodwork, Jones’ follow-up
again hit the post and Andy Swalwell netted from
close range only to be denied by an offside
flag.
Half-time:
Marske United 1v0 Darlington RA
Thompson won a
central free kick on the edge of the box two
minutes into the second period but Richie Ward
hit straight into the wall.
Dom Gamble picked
out Bradley with a clever pass on 52 minutes but
the midfielder again attempted to cross the ball
when he had the chance to shoot.
RA then had a brief
spell of pressure as Mark Taylor blocked a
header on the line, before Brendan Ledgeway
reacted well to cut out a dangerous cross from
Kevin Duggan.
We finally doubled
our advantage after 62 minutes with a great goal
from Wesson. After being set up by Thompson he
bent the ball round Wray and in off the far
post.
Jones and Wesson
both had further chances to score again before
Jones grabbed a typical goal poachers goal to
make it 3-0.
Jones had a great
chance to complete his hat trick on 75 minutes
when he found himself well clear in acres of
space but again failed to beat Wray.
After a super sub
performance last weekend, it was surprising that
it took until the 78th minute for
Owen Dixon to be introduced, and he did what he
does best and waltzed past the fullback before
putting in an early cross for Rob to complete a
fine and well deserved hat trick on 89 minutes.
Unfortunately we
blotted our copy book by giving away a last
minute penalty as Ledgeway was adjudged to have
brought down Philip Caley.
Caley stepped up to
take the spot kick, and although Ledgeway got a
hand to it, couldn’t keep it out.
Full-time:
Marske United 4v1 Darlington RA
It was
disappointing yet again to see so many chances
go begging, but the important thing was that we
got back to winning ways with a much improved
performance that moves us back up to fourth
place in the table.
