MATCH REPORT:
Gillford Park (Away): NL Div 2, 29th August
2009.
F/T : Won 2 - 3
Scorers: Chillingsworth, Jackson, Thompson
Burton was forced
to make two changes from the team that beat
Newton Aycliffe three days earlier as Andy Raw
and Andrew Swalwell were both missing. Ross
Diamond returned to right back with Josh Myers
filling in for Swally in the centre of
midfield. Craig Skelton and Derek Bradley
returned to the squad, taking their places on
the bench as young Owen Dixon deservedly
retained his place in the starting line up.
Gillford gave a
debut to Michael Reed, signed from Workington
Reds the day previous. The forward has a good
record against us having played at Penrith for a
number of years.
Gillford made a
lively start to the game but Marske received the
first chance after eight minutes as the ball
fell to Mark Taylor from a corner but the ball
got stuck under the defenders feet.
Stuart Jackson sent
Dom Gamble away down the left flank on 12
minutes, but Benn Thompson was just beaten to
his cross by James Parker and Owen Dixon’s
follow up was blocked.
Good build up play
after 19 minutes saw Ross Diamond send off Dixon
down the right whose cross into the box was met
awkwardly by Carl Chillingsworth as the home
goalkeeper Gavin Armstrong just did enough to
put him off.
Gamble was causing
their defence all sorts of problems on our left
hand side and on 21 minutes he was again put
through on goal by Jackson. His low shot was
parried by Armstrong but Chillingsworth was on
hand to tap in the rebound from 10 yards out.
Gamble was through
on goal again on 27 minutes but blasted his shot
against Armstrong.
We doubled our lead
a minute later as Dixon’s cross from the right
wing was flicked into the net by Jackson.
The home side
pulled it back to 2-1 within a minute of the
restart. Michael Riding latched on to a neat
pass from the edge of the area and although he
looked to be in an offside position, the
assistant kept his flag down and the forward
scored with a tidy finish past Brendan Ledgeway
from 10 yards.
The gave Gillford a
big lift and they managed to get a bit more into
the game, playing some neat passing football on
the ground.
They nearly
levelled two minutes before half time as Riding
only made half contact with a decent cross into
the box following a quickly taken free kick on
the left. Ledgeway was in the right place to
gather.
Half-time:
Gillford Park 1v2 Marske United
Ledge was forced to
make a great save straight after the restart as
Gillford made some early substitutions.
Dixon broke forward
on 65 minutes and could have centred but chose
to shoot, slicing his shot wide.
Steve Cochrane’s
shot won a corner four minutes later, and from
it, Jackson had a header blocked on the line.
Cochrane gave away
a soft free kick on 71 minutes and Gillford Park
grabbed an equaliser as Reed headed a deep cross
back across goal into the far corner on his
debut.
Park now had added
impetus and a minute later Sean Bannon forced
Ledgeway into a good save, firing low from
outside the box.
Burto made a double
substitution to freshen things up a bit,
replacing Chillingsworth and Cochrane with Craig
Skelton and Derek Bradley.
We scored the
winning goal on 77 minutes. Taylor played a
long ball over the top and in a race with the
goalkeeper, Benn Thompson got to the ball first
and kept a cool head to round the keeper and
slot in.
Shane Erskine
replaced Dixon on 84 minutes as the rain started
to come down heavy, and on 88 minutes he
combined well with Skelton, cutting inside
before hitting a low shot into the side netting.
Full-time:
Gillford Park 2v3 Marske United
Gillford were a
good passing side and having let go of a two
goal lead, we had to show great resolve to
regain an advantage and take home all three
points.
