MATCH REPORT: Gillford Park (Home): NL Div 2, 9th December 2009.

F/T 3-1 (W) Scorers: Dixon, Brunskill, Own goal

Burto made two changes from the team that brushed aside Nelson in the FA Vase.  Josh Myers returned from suspension to replace Micky Waller in midfield, and Danny Brunskill started in place of Rob Jones who switched to the subs bench.

Gillford turned up with a squad of only 11 players, and having arrived late, the referee delayed the kick off by five minutes.

We had a good early chance soon after kick off as Dom Gamble outpaced Craig Thompson to a loose ball on the left and crossed low into the six yard box where Benn Thompson arrived to try and scramble the ball past goalkeeper Gavin Armstrong, but the keeper managed to gather.

Gamble got away down the left again on 10 minutes and picked out Derek Bradley on the edge of the box, who turned and fired low towards Armstrong who managed to save the ball at the second attempt.

Once Gillford got into their stride, it turned into a fairly even game.  Robert Prince was trying to gain control of the midfield, and it was him who hit Gillford’s first shot wide of goal from distance on 20 minutes.

We took the lead two minutes later as a dangerous cross from the right by Gamble was headed into his own net by James Parker, after Owen Dixon had done well to win a corner.

Gillford responded well with a free kick into the box following a Josh Myers challenge, Stuart Jackson having to react quickly to block David Wallace’s shot from 12 yards.

Bradley battled his way past Thompson on 33 minutes to get onto the end of an Andy Swalwell ball forward but couldn’t steer his shot on target.

The referee bottled it on 35 minutes when Dixon got into the box before being brought down by Matthew Read, deeming the challenge to have been made outside the area.

Danny Brunskill tried his best to put the resultant free kick onto Southfield Road.

Our best move of the game involving Swalwell and Gamble resulted in the latter crossing to Bradley in space but he hit a curling shot wide.

Half-time:  Marske United 1 v 0 Gillford Park

We made hard work of our start to the second half.

Dixon gave the ball away on the right and when Kyle Armstong broke away he was brought down by Andy Raw in a dangerous position.

Brendan Ledgeway had to be alert to save Peter Ferris’ free kick.

The Gillford Park goalkeeper had a scare on 55 minutes when he lost the race with Brunskill to a loose ball on the right touchline but as the striker dribbled off towards an empty goal, the linesman raised his flag to say the ball had gone out of play.

Dixon grabbed his third goal in consecutive games following a Gillford Park free kick into our box just before the hour mark.  Bradley cleared the ball to Brunskill on the half way line and quickly played in the overlapping Dixon who took the ball forward and fired past Armstrong from the edge of the box.

We tried to let the visitors back into the game as Bradley gave the ball away cheaply, and after a decent build-up Wallace forced Ledgeway into a good save.

John Seaton replaced Dixon on 67 minutes, and son afterwards we almost made it three nil.

Brunskill controlled a quickly taken free kick and teed up Swalwell who fired against the post from the edge of the box.  Swalwell was first to the rebound but Armstrong blocked his second attempt well.

Myers made a good run forward on 70 minutes and played in Seaton whose shot beat Armstrong but went wide of the far post.

Gillford were still plugging away but were finding Anthony Roberts and Stuart Jackson on top of their game.

Craig Skelton came on for Benn Thompson and Rob Jones replaced Bradley, and soon after it was game over with another well taken goal.

Skelton held the ball up well and rolled it into Brunskill’s path who calmly slotted home.

Gillford pulled a goal baclate in the game as a long range effort came back off the bar and whilst the defence stood watching, Michael Reed reacted quickest to blast home the rebound.
