MATCH REPORT: Guisborough Town (Away): NL Div 2, 8th August 2009.

F/T : Won 1 - 2 Scorers: Swalwell, Bradley

In five seasons at Nunthorpe, three at Northallerton and one at Marske, Burto and Rilo have never won a match on the first day of the season.  Rilo has never lost a game when left in charge, so with Burton on holiday, one of the records would have to give.

After a decent pre-season, it was disappointing to see so many regular first team players missing for various reasons.  Benn Thompson (suspension), Craig Skelton (work), Carl Chillingsworth (nose job) and Jonathan Newton (who knows) meant that all four strikers were absent, as well as Andy Raw (wedding), Ross Diamond (holiday), and Steve Cochrane (work).

We fielded a patched up side, with Glenn Wesson and Derek Bradley used as makeshift strikers, and gave debuts to Stuart Jackson and Adam Blair.

Guisborough managed to field the majority of their first team squad, captained by former Marske striker David Onions.

We almost led within the first 30 seconds of the game.  Wesson got onto the end of a Josh Myers pass and got past Andrew Rafferty but took the ball too wide to shoot.  By the time his cross was headed towards goal by Bradley, Rafferty was back in position to save.

Guisborough led on ten minutes with their first opportunity of the game.  An Onions back-heel broke kindly to Paul Roddam and he slotted past Brendan Ledgeway from a tight angle.

Shane Erskine got onto the end of a quick break on 22 minutes but Lee Bythway got across to put in a firm challenge just outside the box to dispossess the youngster.

Our best chance of the half came on 41 minutes as Andy Swalwell found himself in space just outside the box but curled his shot high and wide.

Half-time:  Guisborough Town 1-0 Marske United

Michael Wade replaced Erskine after the break but it was the home side that started in the ascendancy.

Roddam sent a looping header towards goal on 50 minutes that Ledgeway did well to tip over, and from the resulting corner, Lee Court headed against the bar.

A poor clearance by Jack Proctor on 57 minutes fell to Swalwell who played the ball into Bradley but he struck his shot over from the edge of the box.

Guisborough should have put the game to bed with 25 minutes remaining.  Roddam beat Ledgeway to a loose ball and chipped towards the unguarded goal from the edge of the box, but Jackson got back in the nick of time to clear off of the line.

Then a minute later Luke Bythway’s spooned shot took a deflection off Onions that forced Ledgeway into an excellent save.

A great run down the left wing from Jackson saw him brought down just outside the box on 79 minutes after playing a neat one-two with Wesson.

With Taylor and Jackson both up from defence from the free-kick, the Priorymen were expecting a cross into the box, but Swalwell was too clever for them.  He chose to shoot towards the near post, and with Rafferty caught off guard the keeper could only help parry the ball into his own net.

Marske were now in charge, and with a point seemingly rescued, Wesson limped off to be replaced by debutant Owen Dixon, another member of last season’s under-17 side.

And it was the youngster who broke forward from midfield on 85 minutes to win us a penalty.  Having made his way deep into the Guisborough 18-yard box he was brought down by a clumsy Lee Bythway tackle.

Bradley sent the spot kick straight down the middle but put too much on it for Rafferty to make contact with.

Guisborough pushed men forward in the final minutes and produced another good block out of Ledgeway before Jake Richardson missed the follow up when well positioned but Marske held on for all three points as Wade and Myers kept possession in the corner.

Full-time:  Guisborough Town 1-2 Marske United

With so many players missing the lads showed great team spirit and determination to fight back from a goal down, keeping Rilo’s 100% caretaker record intact.

Guisborough Team:  Rafferty, Proctor, Court (Simcox), Lee Bythway, Portas (Hick), Young (Richardson), Luke Bythway, Roberts, Onions, Roddam, Wood.  Not Used:  Farrington, Gill.

Marske Team: Ledgeway, Myers, Jackson, Swalwell, Roberts, Taylor, Erskine (Wade), Blair, Bradley (Simpson), Wesson (Dixon), Gamble.

Not Used:  Kasonali, Norman.
