MATCH REPORT: Guisborough Town (Home): NL Div 2, 27th January 2010.

F/T : Won 2 - 0  Scorers: - Skelton, Jones

Marske made three changes from the team that drew at Newton Aycliffe four days earlier.

Craig Skelton made his first start for ten matches in place of Benn Thompson, and John Seaton made his first start for the club as he took his place in a new look midfield as we were without Andy Swalwell, Micky Waller and Josh Myers.

In an open start to the game, David Onions carved out two early chances whilst playing on the last defender.  First he broke away between Andy Raw and Richie Ward but had his shot from the edge of the box easily gathered by Brendan Ledgeway when a pass to the unmarked Luke Bythway seemed to be his best option.

Then on six minutes he somehow headed a Bythway cross wide from only six yards out.

Rob Jones did well to get down the left win on 10 minutes and cleverly tricked his way past Louis Smith on the byline to get into the box, but couldn’t quite find Craig Skelton with his pull-back.

Owen Dixon made a surging run forward past three Guisborough players on 14 minutes but just as he was about to pull the trigger, Paul Roddam got across to block.

Skelton won a free kick in a central position just outside the area on 20 minutes, but Derek Bradley passed straight back to a grateful Andrew Rafferty.

Ledgeway made a good collection of Luke Bythway’s free kick on 29 minutes, and following a good build up, Danny Brunskill set up Skelton in the box but he failed to find the target.

Having sustained a spell of Marske pressure, the Priorymen were allowed back into the game as we gave away two silly free kicks.

The second, Ledgeway had to tip around the post, and from the resulting corner Guisborough came inches away from taking the lead as Luke Bythway smashed his header against the crossbar.

This let-off was the wake up call we needed, and we took the lead shortly after on 39 minutes as Jones forced a corner.

Bradley’s corner was headed out wide, but Brunskill picked up the loose ball and whipped in a great cross that Skelton met at the far post and headed past Rafferty from close range.

Half-time:  Marske United 1v0 Guisborough Town

We started the second half well as Jones made a surging run forward to get into the box before winning a corner.

Ward powered Dom Gamble’s flag kick inches over the bar from 8 yards.

Dixon broke away past his marker and made his way towards goal on 67 minutes but took one touch too many allowing Rafferty a chance to get out and save.

We doubled our lead a minute later following a slick move.  Dixon played a good diagonal ball across field and Jones beat Michael Roberts to get on the end of it and guide the ball into the net.

Guisborough were now dead and buried, having no Plan B to the now dormant threat of Onions and Bythway.

Burto made a double substitution soon after the second goal, Benn Thompson replacing Skelton and Anthony Roberts allowing Andy Raw a breather.

We had a golden opportunity to put the game to bed with six minutes remaining, following yet another combination between the tireless Jones and Dixon.

Jones cut in past his marker on the left touchline and put in a fantastic pass to set up Dixon, but after getting away from the last defender, couldn’t get past Rafferty, again choosing to try and take the ball round him rather than shoot.

Full-time:  Marske United 2v0 Guisborough Town

Having edged a very close first half, we upped our game in the second half and ran out comfortable winners in the end, sending our fans home happy in the knowledge that we had completed a deserved double against our near neighbours.
