MATCH REPORT:
Jarrow Roofing (Away): NL Division 2, 5th
September
2009.
F/T 1-5 (W):
Scorers: Skelton 3, Chillingsworth, Jackson
With Anthony
Roberts and Ross Diamond both unavailable, Adam
Blair slotted in to right-back with Derek
Bradley returning to the starting eleven in
midfield. Dom Gamble failed a late fitness test
so Owen Dixon retained his place in the side,
and with Josh Myers having played so well at
Gillford Park, Andy Swalwell had to settle for a
place on the bench.
Jarrow Roofing,
having won all of their six opening fixtures had
a much changed side from last season, including
Northern League Player of the Year Brian Rowe as
captain.
Both teams made a
cagey start to the game with neither side
wanting to make any gambles.
Our first chance of
the game didn’t come until the 26th
minute but we almost led from it. A free kick
into the box was headed out by Danny Carson but
Owen Dixon managed to win it back and crossed it
to Benn Thompson who headed powerfully towards
the bottom right corner, forcing Adam Dowell
into an excellent save.
Roofing’s first
chance came after 25 minutes from a lively move
forward. Michael Chapman got onto a diagonal
ball out to the left and crossed to Michael
Hepplewhite who glanced his diving header wide
from 10 yards.
A celver ball
through midfield from Carl Chillingsworth found
Dixon who did well to ride a challenge from
Carson and put a shot on goal from the edge of
the box, Dowell just getting a foot to it.
The first rash
challenge from the home side came later than
expected as Stuart Dixon was booked for a high
challenge on Steve Cochrane with 40 minutes
gone.
Half-time: Jarrow
Roofing 0-0 Marske United
We started the
second half well, and took the lead on 52
minutes. Dixon made a good run down the left
before being brought down by Martin Thompson.
Cochrane’s free kick into the box took a bounce
before Stuart Jackson struck home on the half
volley.
Three minutes later
a flowing move forward started from a Josh Myers
tackle saw Dixon cut inside from the left and
fire just over the bar from 25 yards out.
Jarrow’s first
chance of the half came on 66 minutes as a free
kick into the box was headed out wide by Mark
Taylor to Tony Thirkell who blasted high over
the bar.
A minute later Adam
Blair brought the ball forward but passed it
straight into the path of Dean Goodwin who sent
Chapman away down the left win. With Blair and
Raw out of position, Myers tracked back to put
him under pressure and Brendan Ledgeway made a
good save to keep our lead intact.
Good build up play
between Dixon and Chillingsworth set up Thompson
in the box on 71 minutes but Dowell made another
good block.
The Roofers nearly
levelled on 73 minutes as Thirkell arrived
untracked onto the end of a Keith Foster cross
from the left but headed wide from ten yards.
Craig Skelton then
replaced Thompson and we thought we’d doubled
our lead on 75 minutes when Chillingworth sent a
powerful header from Derek Bradley’s corner into
the back of the net but the referee ruled it out
for an infringement.
As seems to be
customary when we travel to Jarrow roofing, the
hosts went down to ten men when Goodwin was sent
of for a second bookable offence. Dixon and
Skelton combined and when Skelly invited a
tackle, he tricked the ball past the midfielder
and was clumsily brought down.
We capitalised
within two minutes as neat passing between Myers
and Chillingsworth set up Skelton in the six
yard box but he chose to centre rather than
shoot, leaving Chilli with an easy tap in.A
Blair broke forward quickly on 81 minutes and
crossed into the box to Chillingsworth who took
a touch and set up the onrushing Myers who came
close with a header whilst under pressure from
Rowe.
Martin Thompson
should have walked on 84 minutes when Dixon
broke through and was brought down by having his
shirt tugged by the last man. Having already
reduced the home side to ten men, the referee
bottled it and let him escape with just a yellow
card.
Jarrow replaced
Thompson immediately before he received another
card, and we doubled our lead from the resulting
free kick. Cochrane played in a clever ball to
Skelton who made no mistake from close range.
A minute later
Skelton made it 4-0 as Myers played a neat
central throughball to Skelton who played a
clever dink over the keeper from just outside
the 18 yard box.
Shane Erskine and
Jamie Simpson replaced Blair and Dixon, and
within a minute Roofing pulled a goal back. A
good header from Thirkell looped over Ledgeway
from a deep cross.
We scored
immediately from kick-off as Skelton was played
in at the right hand side of the box and
completed his hat trick in the space of six
minutes with an even better chip over Dowell.
