Marske United FC
Juniors: 2009/10 Season

On a fine Sunday afternoon our U14 lads took to
the pitch to compete against two Saltburn and
two Redcar Town teams in a 6 a-side football
tournament for the Saltburn Victorian
Footballers and Friends Gala Day.
The format was that everyone played each other
and the top 2 teams contested the final and most
of the games were close affairs with 4 draws and
3 one nil wins with only the 2 derby matches
booking the trend ending in 2 nil score-lines.
But arguably the best match of the day apart
from the final was the ep ic encounter between
Saltburn B and Marske United which ended in a 3
goals to 2 victory for Marske snatching the win
from the jaws of defeat.
We had taken the lead with a fine shot from Luke
only to be pegged back and then a close range
finish from Alex Whiley gave Saltburn the lead
and then an inspired tactical change by manager
Paul Corker in moving Josh from defender to
striker changed the outcome of the game with
Josh scoring with his 1st touch as
the striker and then netting the winner after
Ged had caused havoc in the box and the ball
falling nicely for Josh to sweep it home for the
valuable 3 points. After all the matches were
completed Saltburn finished top from Marske Utd
by goal difference of 1 with both teams
finishing with 8 points. We knew the final would
be a close game and so it turned out with both
teams running themselves to a standstill in an
enthralling game played in a great spirit.
Saltburn took the lead after a mix up in our
defence but we fought back to equalise through
Max ( only after the
Dubious goals committee had given it to him) to
take the game into extra-time and mo re drama,
Saltburn scored again and we thought we
were going to be unlucky again but never fear up
popped Captain Marvel Luke to score a screamer
direct from a corner and take the tie into the
dreaded penalty shootout.
Saltburn went first and their keeper coolly
placed his kick past Sam, then up stepped Ged to
finish with aplomb and then Sam made a great
stop to give us the lead and then Jack stepped
up and coolly converted to keep the
Pressure building on Saltburn , they scored to
make it 2-2 and then Captain Luke scored and
then Sam did it again this time saving with his
face , now if Josh kept his composure and
scored we had won the Cup and he did sending the
keeper the wrong way then getting mobbed by
ecstatic players and parents alike and how Paul
did the 4 somersaults especially with his bad
back I don’t know.
So a big well done to our manager Paul Corker
and coaches Gordon Graham and Ian Enderwick and
the squad of Sam Harvey,
Max Heason-Phillips, Joe Corker, Josh Enderwick,
Ged Bramwell, Nathan Taylor, Luke Pearson and
Jack Barker.
On behalf of Marske United I
would like to thank the Saltburn Victorian
Footballers and Friends for their sterling work
year in year out raising money for the local
charities and clubs and also to Saltburn
Athletic F.C for all their hard work in setting
up and making it a well run and enjoyable
competition and especially to the Ref Phil
Gallon for his excellent refereeing in humid
conditions.
