MATCH REPORT:
Nelson (Home): FA Vase, 5th December
2009.
F/T 5-0 (W)
Scorers: Jones, Bradley, Dixon, Brunskill,
Jackson
We only had to make
one enforced change from the side that easily
brushed aside Brandon United a week earlier,
Anthony Roberts replaced the cup tied Richie
Ward at centre back. An incredibly strong set
of substitutes included Danny Brunskill, Glenn
Wesson and Craig Skelton who was back following
his four match ban.
Both teams made a
low tempo start to the game, although all of the
play took place in the Nelson half.
On four minutes
Andrew Raw sent in a deep cross from the right,
with Rob Jones heading over the bar.
A looping header
from Stuart Jackson from Dom Gamble’s corner
brought a great save from Chris Thompson on
seven minutes as he tipped the ball over the
bar, and from the resulting corner, Jackson
somehow put the ball wide from three yards out.
We had a penalty
appeal turned down on nine minutes as Jackson
again got forward from defence and challenged
Thompson to a high ball, ending up flattened on
the floor. Owen Dixon put the loose ball into
the net but had his effort ruled out for
offside.
Rob Jones got away
from his marker after 11 minutes and made his
way into space on the left but his shot from a
narrow angle was parried wide by the visiting
keeper.
It was all Marske,
as Benn Thompson went close with a header from
Bradley’s cross from the left on the quarter of
an hour mark.
The opening goal
finally came two minutes later as we moved the
ball quickly from one end to the other. Brendan
Ledgeway threw the ball out to Andy Raw, who
sent Dixon away down the right. The nippy
youngster made his was into the box and from the
byline pulled the ball back to Jones who made no
mistake from eight yards.
Nelson’s first shot
of the game came after 18 minutes as Martin
Payne tried his luck from distance but was well
off target, and within a minute we had doubled
our lead.
Bradley ghosted
into the box and got on the end of a high cross
from Jones. Thompson scrambled across his goal
line but couldn’t get to Bradley’s weak header
as it bobbled in off the post.
We went in search
of a third goal to finish Nelson off, but found
clear cut chances hard to come by for the
remainder of the half. Bradley got caught in
two minds on 29 minutes and blazed a shot over,
before Andy Swalwell ended a good build up on 40
minutes but couldn’t find a shot to match the
good passing.
Dixon almost
created a carbon copy of our first goal just
before half time as he pulled the ball back from
the byline, but this time there was no one on
the end of his pass to apply a finish.
Half-time:
Marske United 2v0 Nelson
Nelson started
the second half brightly, as captain John
Luker went close with a header from a corner
a minute in.
Jones fired a
shot straight at the Nelson keeper on 48
minutes, but should certainly have made it
3-0 a minute later as he missed a glorious
chance.
Gamble crossed
to Thompson in the box and he rolled it back
for Jones to shoot, but he blazed his shot
well over the bar from 12 yards out.
Marske began to
get back in full control, and after Thompson
had a goal bound shot blocked on the line
after 52 minutes, it wasn’t long before we
scored our third.
Bradley and
Gamble combined on the left flank and
Thompson jumped up high but missed Gamble’s
cross as Dixon arrived at the back post and
stooped low to head the ball home.
We were now
playing well with incredible confidence, and
Jackson came close with a header on the hour
mark.
Nelson’s best
move of the match so far came after 62
minutes as Lance Ogunyode was played in but
struck his shot wide from the edge of the
area.
Danny Brunskill
came on to replace Jones after 67 minutes
and scored with his very first touch. He
put down a free kick and struck an
unstoppable left foot shot into the top
corner from 25 yards out. Even the Nelson
number stood and applauded him.
Credit must be
given to the Nelson players, as despite the
score line, they continued to try and grab a
consolation.
Andrew Smith
lashed a cross come shot just over the bar
on 70 minutes, then two minutes later Sam
Heap forced Ledgeway into his first save of
the game.
Substitute
Glenn Wesson got the better of his marker on
73 minutes and put a dangerous cross into
the box that the keeper failed to collect,
leaving Jackson with a close range tap in.

It should have
been 6-0 on 82 minutes as Craig Skelton
played in Wesson, but instead of shooting
past Thompson, he tried to dribble the ball
round the advancing keeper and ran the ball
out of play.
Heap found
himself through on goal in the dying minutes
of the game, but it wasn’t to be Nelson’s
day as with just the keeper to get past,
Ledgeway came out to make an excellent
block.
Full-time:
Marske United 5v0 Nelson
A professional
polished performance against another club
from a higher level than ourselves sees us
reach the national stage of the competition
for the second season running. We couldn’t
have hit top form at a better time as for
the third game running we managed to keep a
clean sheet, and with five different
scorers, confidence is certainly high within
the squad.
