MATCH REPORT: Newton Aycliffe (Home): NL Div 2, 26th August 2009.

F/T : Won 1 - 0 Scorer: Chillingsworth

Once again Burto had to make enforced changes to players unavailability.  This weeks absentees were Ross Diamond, Derek Bradley and Craig Skelton, but we welcomed back batsman Andy Raw and striker Benn Thompson.  Carl Chillingsworth partnered Benn up front in his first start since joining the club.

Newton Aycliffe, who have made a good start to life in the Northern League, were without top scorer Elliott Gardner and former Darlington front man Danny Mellanby so gave a debut to Mark Brischuk signed three days earlier.

Aycliffe started well, Brischuk turned past Anthony Roberts way too easily in the second minute but shot straight at Brendan Ledgeway from the edge of the box.

Our first chance came on five minutes as Chillingsworth latched on to a flick on in the box and centred across goal but Thompson just failed to connect with it as he slid in at the far post.

Owen Dixon almost put us into the lead on eight minutes after fancy footwork saw him jink past a defender and force visiting keeper Stephen Richardson into a good low save.

We were enjoying plenty of possession but the central midfield pairing of Cochrane and Swalwell were giving the ball away to often. Cochrane lost out to Chase McMullen on 20 minutes and after he made up ground, forced a low save out of Ledgeway.

The visitors looked sharp going forward, and Mark Taylor had to react quickly to concede a corner two minutes later.

The lively Dixon went close after a good run on 35 minutes, then five minutes later looked likely to score as he made his way down the right hand side and into the box, but a great last ditch tackle from Wayne Hall prevented his shot and the keeper blocked.

Dom Gamble got forward shortly before half time and dinked the ball over the oncoming keeper before being brought down in the box, an offside flag preventing a certain penalty and possible red card.

Half-time:  Marske United 0v0 Newton Aycliffe

Dixon won a central free kick within the first ten seconds of the second half, Cochrane striking a vicious low shot at goal that Richardson got his body behind.

We made the breakthrough after 48 minutes as Richardson failed to collect Stuart Jackson’s deep cross into the box and Chillingsworth sent a great looping header back over him into the goal.

A couple of bizarre referee decisions followed as a soft yellow card set the precedent and two more quickly followed.  Benn Thompson received his for challenging a header with Hall, who was unable to continue and was replaced by Anthony Campbell.

Newton Aycliffe’s first real chance of the half fell to Dion Raitt on 64 minutes but the midfielder fired over from 30 yards out.

Anthony Roberts was sent up front for a long free kick on 67 minutes and nearly ended up scoring.  Having got onto the end of a Thompson flick-on he managed to keep the ball in play and was unfortunate to blast his shot straight at Thompson.

It should really have been 2-0 on 77 minutes as Dixon and Chillingsworth both cleverly beat the offside trap.  Dixon broke away quickly down the right wing but his low centre towards Chilli was cut out by a defender. Josh Myers and Adam Blair replaced Cochrane and Chillingsworth for the final 12 minutes, as we saw out the remainder of the game without any scares.

Full-time:  Marske United 1v0 Newton Aycliffe

A very good result against a team that will take plenty of points off teams on their travels this season.  It was important we got straight back to winning ways after a disappointing result at Sunderland Ryhope, and we certainly looked a much better side with Benn and Chilli partnering each other up front.
