MATCH REPORT:
Northallerton (Home): NL Div 2, 10th October
2009.
F/T 1-1 (D)
Scorer: Skelton

Skelly gets up close and personal with a new
friend...
With Benn Thompson
and Rob Jones both unavailable, Craig Skelton
and Carl Chillingsworth partnered each other up
front for the first time this season., as our
starting eleven included six former
Northallerton players. Glenn Wesson also
returned to the starting line-up for the first
time since the opening day of the season.
Ross Diamond picked
up a caution after only 90 seconds for a rash
challenge on Ian Smurthwaite, and it was the
visitors who made the brighter start to the
game.
Gary Mitchell hit a
decent shot on the turn from outside the box on
nine minutes but Brendan Ledgeway held it well.
A minute later
Craig Skelton played the ball back to the
onrushing Josh Myers at the edge of the area who
beat Stephen Craggs with his first time shot,
only to see it clip the outside of the post.
We were failing to
keep hold of the ball in a stop start game, and
on the quarter of an hour mark Richard Thompson
cut in from the left past Adam Blair but hit an
early shot from distance well wide.
A minute later
Blair and Wesson combined to sent Skelton
through in the box, but Craggs got out quickly
to force a corner.
We were now getting
into our stride as Myers set Wesson on his way
to force a save out of Craggs to win another
corner.
Another good build
up on 22 minutes ended with Myers crossing from
the byline. Skelton met the ball at the near
post but flashed his header wide.
A minute later
Skelton again went close, shooting past Craggs
but wide of the post from the edge of the box.
From a
Northallerton free kick on 28 minutes we made a
quick break as Wesson found Chillingsworth with
a long cross field ball. Under pressure from
the two centre backs, Chilli struck wide from
outside the box, then two minutes later, Skelton
fired over from a tight angle.
After enduring a
long spell of Marske pressure, it was the away
team that broke the deadlock against the run of
play on 33 minutes. A ball forward bounced
between Stuart Jackson and Andy Raw, and the
lively Gary Mitchell capitalised, running
through to hit a low shot past Ledgeway.
Chillingsworth had
a glorious chance to equalise just two minutes
later as Jackson headed down a free kick into
his path but he launched his half volley onto
Southfield Road from ten yards out.
It didn’t take us
long to get back on level terms though.
Chillingsworth took a couple of touches on the
edge of the box before cleverly chipping the
ball over the defence to Skelton who cleverly
chipped the ball over Craggs from close range.
Northallerton appealed that the ball hadn’t
actually crossed the line, but assistant Ray
Clementson was well positioned to rule the goal
legal.
We should have been
in the lead by half time as another chance went
begging with three players all having a chance
to put the ball in the back of the net. A long
clearance from Blair from a Town free kick found
its way to Craggs at the other end, but the
keeper miss kicked his clearance straight to
Wesson, 30 yards out. Glenn made his way into
the area and instead of shooting rolled the ball
into the path of Andy Swalwell. Under pressure
from his marker, Swalwell teed up Chillingsworth,
but he again fired wide of the goal from close
range.
Half-time:
Marske United 1-1 Northallerton Town
Again, we made a
slow start to the second half as it started
rather even. Town substitute Christian Holliday
shot wide on 53 minutes before Chillingsworth
did the same with a half chance two minutes
later.
Jackson clearly won
the ball from Smurthwaite on 69 minutes, but the
referee awarded a free kick following the
midfielders scream from Jackson’s tackle.
Thompson struck his kick narrowly over the bar
from 25 yards.
This gave us the
wake up call we needed and for the final 20
minutes we dominated the match creating chance
after chance.
The best move of
the second half came after 72 minutes Skelton
played a 1-2 with Chillingsworth inside the box,
but struck his volley into the side netting from
ten yards.
A minute later
Wesson beat the offside trap, latching on to a
ball over the top, but blasted over the bar on
the half volley.
Two minutes later,
Glenn was through again but hit his shot from
the edge of the box straight at Craggs, then on
75 minutes, substitute Derek Bradley shot just
over the bar from 20 yards after a flowing move
forwards.

In a frantic
period, Holliday caught us on the break and got
down the left flank and into the box, but just
as he was about to pull the trigger, Bradley
came out of nowhere to put in a tackle. We
broke straight up the other end, but Skelton’s
attempted lob was caught by the relieved Craggs.
Bradley had a
glorious chance to put us into the lead on 84
minutes when he met Andy Raw’s cross at the far
post but headed wide from close range when it
looked harder to miss.
It was all Marske
United as we searched for a second goal, but we
just couldn’t seem to hit the target.
A quality taken
free kick to Skelton on 88 minutes brought us
agonisingly close to a winner. He took a touch
inside the box and again tried to lob the keeper
from close range when power may have been the
more sensible route from 8 yards out. His shot
failed to make the target and turned out to be
more of a cross that Myers just failed to head
on target.
With a minute
remaining, the ball fell to Swalwell just
outside the 18 yard box who blasted the ball
towards goal, only to see it blocked by an
unsuspecting defender.
Full-time:
Marske United 1-1 Northallerton Town
For the fourth time
in almost as many matches, we again failed to
turn our chances into goals and dropped another
two points on a day that none of the teams
around us managed to win their games either.
The main thing is though, we are creating the
chances, and surely it won’t be long before
someone receives a duly earned pasting.
