With Stuart
Jackson, Craig Skelton and Ross Diamond amongst
this weeks absentees, Burto had a bit of a shake
up among the starting line-up, opting for a
4-5-1 formation.
New signing Richie
Ward took Jacko’s place amongst the defence,
whilst Rob Jones and Andy Raw joined the regular
midfielders as Carl Chillingsworth had to settle
for a place on the bench.
The Robins made a
lively start to the game and should have had a
free kick from within the penalty area as
Brendan Ledgeway picked up a Richie Ward
back-pass, but fortunately for us, referee Dean
Hulme waved for play on.
Our first
opportunity of the game was a great one as Rob
Jones played the ball across to Glenn Wesson who
chested it down before firing a half volley on
target that Mathew Hunter expertly saved.
Wesson was again
fed the ball in the box on 16 minutes, this time
by Andy Raw. Wesson took a less direct route,
cutting inside on to his left foot, but struck a
weak shot towards the near post that Hunter
gathered.
Shileds’ first
chance came on 27 minutes as Adam Blair lost
possession in a dangerous position. John Amos
carried the ball forwards and forced Ledgeway
into a good low save with a shot from the edge
of the area.
Immediately up the
other end, Benn Thompson centred to Jones who
was unlucky top be denied a penalty after
appearing to be hacked down.
Not to be denied,
Jones grabbed the opening goal on the half hour
mark when he latched on to a defence splitting
pass from Raw, before rounding the keeper to
score.
North Shields
created a good chance on 34 minutes as Ledgeway
saved low from Andy Hay, then three minutes
later Ledgeway was called into action again as
Robbie Livermore played a one-two with Hay and
shot low towards goal.
Shields finished
the half well, but found Mark Taylor and Richie
Ward in good form at the back.

United 1v0 North Shields
Whatever was said
at half time failed to have a positive effect on
the players as we struggled to retain
possession. Thompson passed straight to James
Luccock on 54 minutes who broke forward into the
box and forced a good save from Ledgeway from
six yards to force a corner.
We were inviting
pressure upon ourselves and Ledgeway was finally
beaten on 56 minutes. Hay turned past Ward
inside the box, and unleashed an unstoppable
shot past Ledgeway that we were relieved to see
smack against the upright and rebound to safety.
It was only going
to be a matter of time before we conceded, so
Burto made a change on 62 minutes. Carl
Chillingsworth replaced goal scorer Jones, and
we switched to a 4-4-2 formation with Myers
taking up a role on the left hand side.
Chilli brought
about our only glimpse of attacking play six
minutes later when he jinked his way into space,
only to blast his shot high over the bar from
just outside the box.
We were playing a
flat back nine at times and North Shields
eventually grabbed the equaliser with four
minutes remaining as an innocuous ball into the
box bobbled about. We failed to deal with it
and Hay managed to bundle it over the line.
Surprisingly, North
Shields were happy to sit back for the remaining
few minutes and settle for a deserved point.

United 1v1 North Shields
A very poor second
half performance saw us fail to capitalise on a
hard earned first half lead. Fortunately for
us, the Robins left it late before equalising,
and had they done earlier on in the half we
would have inevitably been on the end of a
defeat.
