MATCH REPORT: Stokesley (Homes): North Riding Senior cup, Wed 3rd February 2010.

F/T : Lost 1 - 1 (Stokesley won 4-3 on penalties) Scorer: Skelton

Following a late pitch inspection the game was given the go ahead to take place despite large parts of the pitch being frozen solid.

With the FA Vase 5th Round tie at Whitehawk just three days away, Burto made seven changes to the side that beat Guisborough a week earlier.  Mark Taylor and Tommy Raw returned after lengthy lay-offs to get a much needed game in, while Benn Thompson, Rob Jones and Derek Bradley weren’t risked.  Five first team regulars took a place on the bench, along with Johnny Peirson who hadn’t played since our North Riding County Cup game against Middlesbrough in April 2009.

Stokesley were close to full strength and also had a few good options on the bench.

The visitors created the first opportunity after eight minutes following a bit of showboating from Lev Yalcin.  His clever back heel volley into space should have been collected by young goalkeeper Adam Norman, but he hesitated and failed to come out leaving the league’s top scorer Andy Jennings time and space to pick a shot.  Having shot past Norman from an acute angle, the ball bounced to safety after hitting the near post.

We were caught napping at the back again on 12 minutes as Jennings was allowed a free shot on the turn from 12 yards that he hit just wide of the goal.

Craig Skelton created our first chance on 17 minutes after a good run past two defenders.  He cut inside and tried dinking the ball over Robert Dean but the keeper got a hand to it.

Stokesley led on 22 minutes following a defensive mistake.  Richie Ward tried passing the ball back to Norman but miss hit it allowing Bryan Stewart to capitalise as he picked up the loose ball and rounded Norman to score.

Skelton shot narrowly over on 24 minutes with his first touch following a decent passing build up, and for the next ten minutes or so we played rather well, passing the ball around much better than Stokesley.  By now Ward was on top of Stokesley’s only threat – a ball into space down the left for Jennings or Stewart.

Shortly before half time Skelton won a free kick just outside the area but Simon Kasonali failed to recreate a finish from his past as he hit a rising shot over the bar.

A poor clearance from Norman in the opening minute of the second half fell to the feet of Nathan Liddell but the midfielders first time shot from distance went wide.

Stokesley had the ball in the net on 50 minutes but had it ruled out.  Simon O’Shea got the finishing touch to Yalcin’s goal bound shot but was stood in an offside position, cancelling out what would have been a certain goal.

The ball fell to Stewart just inside the box on the hour mark but the winger lashed his shot over the bar.

Dom Gamble replaced Josh Myers with John Seaton tucking inside, and Johnny Peirson came on for Tom Raw as we pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages of the game.

Seaton played an excellent defence splitting pass through for Skelton on 75 minutes, but he was unable to beat the keeper as the ball got stuck under his feet.

Two minutes later a slick move resulted in Skelton playing a diagonal ball towards Peirson who blasted a first time shot that clipped the side of the upright.

Mark Taylor tried some kamikaze defending on 80 minutes as he passed straight to Liddell just outside the box.  He took a touch but couldn’t steer his shot on target.

Gamble’s free kick into the box was only punched as far as Seaton on the edge of the box, but after stepping past the first defender he struck a low shot narrowly wide.

We equalised with five minutes to go as a long ball forward was headed past dean by Neil Radigan allowing Skelton to run onto the loose ball and tuck it into the empty net, forcing the game to go to penalties.

Full-time:  Marske United 1v1 Stokesley

Danny Brunskill and Simon Kasonali both had their penalties saved by Dean, as Norman managed to keep out Jonathan Pennock’s spot kick, with Stokesley progressing through 4-3.

Marske United:  Norman, Roberts, Jackson, Myers (Gamble), Ward, Taylor, Helm (Brunskill), Kasonali, Skelton, T.Raw (Peirson), Seaton.

Stokesley:  Dean, Pennock, Dougall, Radigan, Crager, Wheatley, S.O’Shea (A.O’Shea), Liddell, Yalcin, Jennings (Hore)(Poole), Stewart.
