MATCH REPORT:
Team Northumbria (Home): NL Division 2, 3rd
October
2009.
F/T 1-0 (W) Jackson
With Roberts,
Taylor, Bradley, Wesson, Jones and Skelton all
missing, Burto had to shuffle the team about
somewhat. Adam Blair returned to the side in
defence and Dom Gamble moved back to left back
with Stuart Jackson tucking inside.
Transfer listed
Steve Cochrane kept his place in central
midfield, with Ross Diamond returning amongst
the substitutes.
A gale force wind
made conditions difficult as Marske lost the
toss and were forced to play into it.
Team Northumbria
were dealt an early blow as Gavin Donogue limped
off early on and had to be replaced by Chris
Blench.
The only bit of
decent football played early in the game came
after 22 minutes when Owen Dixon and Dom Gamble
combined on the left flank, Steve Cochrane
forcing the first corner of the game from
Gamble’s cross.
Team Northumbria’s
first effort at goal didn’t come until after the
half hour mark when Callum Hill tried his luck
from distance but Brendan Ledgeway coped with it
easily.
Some good
refereeing decisions followed as Mark Andrews
let three robust challenges go as Mark Bertram,
Andy Swalwell and Josh Myers all escaped with
just a talking to.
To prove just how
windy conditions were, Ledgeway conceded a
corner from his own goal kick with 36 minutes
gone.

We ended the half
well on top despite playing without the wind
advantage. Gamble was sent away down the left
wing and crossed from near the corner flag to
Benn Thompson in the six yard box who flashed a
header wide of the far post.
A minute later
Cochrane was brought down at the side of the
area and Thompson just failed to make full
contact with Gamble’s free kick as the ball was
scrambled to safety.
The closest we came
to scoring came in first half injury time as
Dixon broke past Chris Blench and made his way
into the box but instead of shooting tried to
set up Carl Chillingsworth, and his deflected
pass looped up over stand in keeper Gary
McCormick and bounced just wide of the far post.
The important thing
was that we made it to half time without
conceding, as the visitors would find it an up
hill struggle to score against the wind during
the second half.
Half-time:
Marske United 0v0 Team Northumbria
We were quickly
into our stride after the break with
Dixon making two
probing runs forward.
What proved to be
the winning goal was scored on 53 minutes
following a corner. Chillingsworth’s initial
header was blocked on the line by Ross Wilkinson
but Stuart Jackson was on hand to stroke home
the rebound from close range, his fourth league
goal this season.

We ebbed and flowed
for the next 20 minutes or so, forcing several
corners, but failed to further test McCormick in
the visiting goal.
We were given a bit
of a scare on 77 minutes as Team Northumbria
came close to equalising following a rare
attack. Phillipe Kane spun between Adam Blair
and Andy Raw and hit a rising left footed shot
towards goal that was caught by the grateful
Ledgeway.
Ross Diamond
replaced Chillingsworth on 78 minutes, and Shane
Erskine came on for Dixon with five minutes
remaining as we played out the remainder of the
game without much to comment on, just happy to
collect the three points when the final whistle
eventually blew.
Full-time: Marske
United 1v0 Team Northumbria
The lads adapted to
the conditions better than the visitors and
deservedly won the game having had the majority
of possession and chances.
With many teams on
FA Vase duty, the win moved us up to third place
in the table. But with teams having games in
hand on us it is important that we keep the
winning mentality going and put a run together
that will consolidate us a spot amongst the
promotion places.
