MATCH REPORT: Thornaby (Home): League Cup, 23rd September 2009.

F/T 7-2 (W): Scorers: Thompson 3, Cochrane, Swallwell, Chillingsworth, Erskine

Following defeat at Brandon, Burto made three changes to the starting eleven.  Anthony Roberts replaced Adam Blair in defence and Andy Swalwell returned from injury replacing the unavailable Derek Bradley.

New signing Tom Raw was put straight into the side as we opted to play a 4-3-3 formation for the first time this season.

We started with all the early possession but created little with it in the final third except for a weak overhead kick from Carl Chillingsworth that Kevin Winspear easily gathered.

Thornaby came close to breaking the deadlock after 14 minutes following a free kick into the box.  The ball fell to Stephen Hodgson who smashed a first time shot narrowly over the bar from 10 yards out.

Tom Raw beat the offside trap on 17 minutes to chase a ball over the top but Winspear made connection with the ball first as it wouldn’t come down for Raw.

Marske led direct from a corner on 23 minutes as the visiting keeper just stood and watched as Steve Cochrane’s flag kick sailed in at the far post.

Josh Myers received the first caution of the match on 25 minutes for a hard but fair challenge on Matthew Crossan.

A poor free kick by Thornaby gave possession straight to Chillingsworth who sent the ball forward for Tom Raw and Benn Thompson to run onto, the latter doubling our lead with a low shot to the keepers right from just inside the box.

Immediately from the kick-off, Daniel Dawson took it upon himself to try and attack, dribbling past four Marske players to get into the box but lashed his shot well off target.

Tom Raw’s debut was short lived as he hobbled off with an ankle injury five minutes before half time, Owen Dixon his replacement.

Right on the stroke of half time Chillingsworth did well to dispossess keeper Kevin Winspear without fouling him and Thompson struck home the loose ball into the empty net.

Half-time:  Marske United 3v0 Thornaby

Five minutes after the restart Dixon jinked his way past two defenders down the left wing and into the box.  He struck a low shot past Winspear but also just wide of the far post.

Winspear was again at fault for a goal as we made it 4-0 on 52 minutes.  Thompson completed his hat trick after he managed to block the keepers clearance resulting with the ball ricocheting into the goal.

Thornaby pulled a goal back on 56 minutes as Roberts failed to deal with a long ball over the top and former Teesside Athletic striker Daniel Drazdauskas finished well into the top corner.

Swalwell made it 5-1 two minutes later with the goal of the game, Winspear getting nowhere near his 25 yard strike.

The referee blew for a foul on 63 minutes as Josh Myers won a header in the Thornaby penalty area despite a high foot from a defender.

Having not pointed to the penalty spot, the Thornaby players presumed they had been awarded a free kick and ran off down the pitch only to find out the ref had given us an indirect free kick from inside the box.  Thompson reacted quickly and teed up Chillingsworth to blast home the ball into the top corner.

With the game out of sight, Burto brought on Adam Blair and Shane Erskine for Myers and Chillinsworth.

Thornaby pulled it back to 6-2 with three minutes left.  Thompson mishit a clearance from a Thornaby corner and Dean Fox blasted home from the edge of the box.  Brendan Ledgeway got a hand to the ball but there was too much power on the shot.

In the final move of the game, Shane Erskine got onto the end of a ball over the top and contolled well before finishing past Winspear from the edge of the area, scoring his first senior goal for the club.

Full-time:  Marske United 7v2 Thornaby

The way we have been playing of late it was only a matter of time before somebody received a hammering.  Unfortunately for Thornaby, it happened to be them.

Marske United:  Ledgeway, A.Raw, Jackson, Swalwell, Roberts, Taylor, T.Raw (Dixon), Cochrane, Thompson, Chillingsworth (Erskine), Myers (Blair).  Not Used:  Kasonali, Norman.

Thornaby:  K.Winspear, Livingstone, Robinson, Dawson, Pearson, Crossan, Hodgson, Tomlinson, Gibson, C.Winspear, Garside.  Subs:  Fox, Pisani, Morton, Drazdauskas, Hole.
