MATCH REPORT:
Thornaby (Away): NL Div 2, 11th August
2009.
F/T : Draw 0 - 0
Scorers: -
With all the main
strikers still missing, temporary manager Mark
Riley made two changes from the starting line-up
at Guisborough.
Steve Cochrane
returned to replace the injured Glenn Wesson,
and Owen Dixon, who did well when he came off
the bench against Guisborough, replaced Shane
Erskine on the right.
Thornaby gave Karl
Garside a debut in defence having signed him
from Murton, and also welcomed back former
Marske midfielder Daryll Tomlinson.
We took to what can
only be described as a shocking pitch, with the
grass in desperate need of a cut, and Thornaby
were soon on the offensive.
Brendan Ledgeway
dropped a free kick put into the box but managed
to clear it, and on the break Owen Dixon was
fouled by Thornaby left-back Terry Robinson.
Summer transfer
target Dean Fox turned and fired over from just
outside the box on 11 minutes before a good move
down the right saw Derek Bradley find Josh Myers
who produced a good cross into the unoccupied
box.
Bradley latched
onto a throughball on 19 minutes but was unlucky
with his shot, then Dom Gamble fired well wide
four minutes later.
On 27 minutes
Ledgeway made a good save from Ian Bishop’s firm
header following a Thornaby free-kick, and from
the resulting clearance, Dixon had a good run
down the right but his cross-come-shot was
caught by Kevin Winspear in the Thornaby goal.
Shortly after,
Dixon
was dead legged by guess who, Robinson, and had
to be replaced by Shane Erskine.
Mark Taylor made a
good clearing header before the finicky referee
brought an end to a poor quality first half.
Half-time:
Thornaby 0v0 Marske United
The second half
never really changed with the first sight at
goal coming on 50 minutes as Cochrane struck
over the bar.
Thornaby had a good
chance on 57 minutes but Ledgeway made a save,
then two minutes later Steven Hodgson put his
shot wide.
Bradley beat their
keeper to the ball on 62 minutes but his lob
from the edge of the box landed just wide.
We were unfortunate
not to have taken the lead on 70 minutes as
Stuart Jackson was fouled and from Andy
Swalwell’s free kick, Cochrane’s header was
harshly disallowed for offside.
Gamble made a good
run forward on 84 minutes but shot wide, and
Jackson
was luck to get away with just a yellow card
near the end as he brought Danny Corbett down
with a late challenge.
We had the same
referee as we had three days earlier at
Guisborough but some players don’t learn. Both
Swalwell and Cochrane were booked for not
keeping their mouths shut, though at times you
did have sympathy with them.
Full-time:
Thornaby 0v0 Marske United
Hopefully things
will change when the strikers return as we don’t
really look like scoring at the minute.
