MATCH REPORT:
Thornaby (Home): NL Division 2, 6th March 2010.
F/T 3-0 (W)
Scorers: Thompson, Bradley, Gamble
For only the second
time this season, Burto named an unchanged team,
coming off the back of a good home draw against
leaders Sunderland Ryhope.
Both teams started
the game positively, but there were no chances
created in the early stages of the game.
Rob Jones made a
good tackle on Adam Livingstone in the Thornaby
box, leaving him free to bare down on goal, but
the referee deemed him to have fouled the
defender.
Two
minutes later we made a good quick break forward
from our own box but Owen Dixon failed to
deliver the final ball.
Marske were soon in
control of the game and nearly took the lead on
16 minutes. The ball was played in to Tom Raw’s
feet who ghosted into space inside the box and
turned well. His cross come shot was blocked on
the line and fell to Andy Swalwell whose shot
from six yards out was blocked. Benn Thompson
headed the resulting corner inches wide.
We took the lead on
26 minutes following a corner from Derek
Bradley. The ball was headed back into the box
by Swalwell to Jones who had two attempts
blocked, the second falling kindly to
Thompson who made no mistake from close
range.
Jones made a mazy
run past three defenders into the Thornaby box
on 29 minutes but couldn’t quite find a clinical
finish as Patrick Pisani managed to save.
We had a good call
for a penalty turned down on 34 minutes as Jones
brought down a Bradley corner and tricked his
way past Chris Moore, before almost having his
shirt ripped from his back just as he was about
to shoot.
Tommy Raw had to be
carried from the pitch shortly before half
time. After beating Mohammed Abdullah to the
ball he was clattered from behind and had to be
replaced by Danny Brunskill.
Half-time:
Marske United 1 v 0 Thornaby
We doubled our lead
within a minute of the restart as a corner into
the box fell to Jones who teed up
Bradley
to fire home.
We nearly made it
3-0 a minute later as Dixon broke into space on
the right wing and centred across the six yard
box. Jones slid in at the far post
to keep the ball in
play and pulled the ball back to Swalwell who
hit the bar with a deflected shot.
Dixon created
himself a good chance on 52 minutes as he broke
onto a loose ball on the right and made it into
the box but was put off by the advancing keeper
and failed to get a shot away.
Jones completed a
hat trick of assists on 65 minutes by setting
Gamble up for our third goal.
Gamble broke into
space on the left wing and played a neat one-two
with Jones before calmly slotting a first time
shot past Pisani.
Thornaby’s best
chance of the game came on 70 minutes after
spending several minutes pressing our defence.
Chris Baxter’s floated ball into the box was
headed back across Brendan Ledgeway and also
wide of the far post by Abdullah.
Thompson put a
header on target with seven minutes remaining
but it lacked power from distance, and Pisani
got across to collect it.
Minutes from the end
we came close to scoring a fourth goal as we
broke quickly to get four on three. Thompson
had options and played in Dixon inside the box
but Pisani got off his line quickly to block his
shot, and the move broke down.
