MATCH REPORT: Team Northumbria (Away): FA Cup, 15th August 2009.

F/T 4-0 (L)

There were 14 magpies on the pitch when we arrived at Coach Lane, one for sorrow, two for joy and all that.  We were about to find out that 14 meant disaster.

Marske welcomed back Craig Skelton and Ross Diamond to the team for their first starts of the season, and also included new signing Lee Bowes but were still without six key players as we set out on the road to Wembley.

Goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway could only have himself to blame as Northumbria took the lead with the first shot of the match on four minutes.  Bowes conceded a free kick 30 yards out and James Novak let fly from a central position.  Ledge got across but must have judged it to be going wide and could only look on as it sneaked its way into the top corner of the goal.

New boy Bowes played a couple of good balls forward only for Skelton to be given narrowly offside, before his first game ended prematurely after he went down with an injured knee after just nine minutes.

Shane Erskine replaced Bowes with Bradley switching to the right hand side as we tried to force our way back into the game.

A brief spell of pressure from us, turned into a goal for the Students on 14 minutes.  Josh Myers’ cross was caught by home goalkeeper Andrew Jennison, and his long knock down field should have been coped with routinely by Mark Taylor or Ledgeway.  Ledge somehow failed to collect it and was left red-faced as Lee Johnson ran round him onto the loose ball and slotted into an empty net to double their lead.

Shell-shocked, it took us a while to get going again with our first chance at goal not coming until the 25th minute.  Andy Swalwell’s free-kick into the box finally found its way to Diamond but his snap shot from six yards out was blocked on the line by James Mobberley.

We ended the half on the attack but almost conceded a third goal against the run of play with 37 minutes gone.  John Redhead was left with far too much space on the left and crossed to Mark McCutcheon but the big striker put his free header wide which was a big let off.

Derek Bradley missed a good chance from eight yards on 39 minutes before Swalwell hit a direct free kick just wide from the edge of the area three minutes later.

Half-time:  Team Northumbria 2-0 Marske United

We had much more of the play after the break but were found severely lacking going into the final third.  Craig Skelton put in a man-of-the-match performance but was given very little support.

The ball fell kindly to Bradley on 58 minutes but he miss-hit his shot wide from three yards, and Erskine got forward just after the hour mark but sent a low shot wide of the goal from 15 yards.

Bradley tested their keeper with a good shot at goal on 69 minutes but Jennison did well to parry it around the post, and from the resulting corner, Bradley headed over.

Northumbria made it 3-0 with their first chance of the second half after 72 minutes.  Substitute Adam Davey got onto the end of a defence splitting pass from midfield and slotted the ball under Ledgeway.

That was game over and some slack defending on 80 minutes allowed Davey through again to add his second and Team Northumbria’s fourth.

We put on a late rally in search of a consolation, but Skelton’s shot at goal three minutes from time took a deflection for a corner.

Full-time:  Team Northumbria 4v0 Marske United

A very disappointing result in a game when we never really got going. Our opponents were nothing special but we seemed very lethargic all over the pitch and some players must be reminded that pre season ended three games ago.

I know the club could do with the money that an F.A. cup run would generate but our main aim for this season has got to be promotion. Let's hope we can get back on track on Wednesday against Whickham but after picking up a couple more injuries I think we need a couple more additions to the squad.

Team Northumbria:

Jennison, Bertram, Novak, Mobberley, Donoghie (Patterson), Briggs, Hall, Cairns, Johnson, McCutcheon (Davey), Redhead (James).  Not Used:  Jones, Baistow.

Marske United:

Ledgeway, Myers, Gamble, Swalwell, Roberts, Taylor (Simpson), Bowes (Erskine), Blair, Diamond (Kasonali), Skelton, Bradley.
