MATCH REPORT:
Washington (Away): NL Div 2, 26th September
2009.
F/T 1-1 (D)
Scorer: Swallwell
With almost a full
squad at his disposal, Burto made only one
change to the side that hammered Thornaby in
midweek. Dom Gamble returned from injury to
replace the inured Tom Raw as we reverted to a
4-4-2 formation.
We started with all
the early possession without creating anything
up front.
Carl Chillingsworth
charged down a clearance from home goalkeeper
Ben Starford on 14 minutes but it deflected wide
for a goal kick, then on 23 minutes Dom Gamble
got into the box but his cross from the by-line
was cut out by a defender.
Stuart Jackson
miss-hit a back pass after 34 minutes which was
cut out by David Moat. With Moat through on
goal he was brought down by Jackson who was
lucky to escape with a yellow card. Dale
Crawford hit the resulting free kick straight
into the wall.
Having hardly been
in our half for most of the half it was sod’s
law that Washington took the lead on 44 minutes
with their first real attack of the game. Pater
Watling beat the offside trap and found himself
in acres of space, firing low past Brendan
Ledgeway for his tenth league goal of the
season.
We responded
immediately as Benn Thompson rolled the ball
inside to Chillingsworth who turned away from
his marker but scuffed a low shot wide from the
edge of the area.
Half-time:
Washington 1v1 Marske United
Josh Myers was
replaced by Owen Dixon for the second half
having picked up a knock during the first
period.
Steve Cochrane was
brought down in a central position just outside
the 18 yard box, but Andy Swalwell failed to
test Starford with the resulting free kick.
Neil Lowden was
given a free header from a Washington corner on
62 minutes and Ledgeway had to react quickly to
tip the ball over the bar for another corner.
Burto responded by
bringing on Craig Skelton to replace
Chillingsworth a minute later.
With fifteen
minutes remaining, Swalwell beat Starford to a
high ball over the top and bravely stuck out a
foot to guide the ball home from midway inside
the penalty are.
The best chance of
the game fell to Skelton with five minutes
remaining, but having got on the end of a clever
pass from Cochrane and getting away from his
marker he failed to make contact with the ball
when 1-on-1 with the advancing keeper. The ball
broke free to Dixon on the edge of the box but
he miss-hit the follow-up, striking it straight
over the bar.
In an entertaining
last few minutes, Swalwell again failed to
deliver a decent shot at goal with a free kick
that Starford easily gathered.
Then deep into
stoppage time Skelton got onto the end of a ball
forward from Andy Raw and forced a corner with a
decent shot towards goal.
Washington failed
to clear Cochrane’s flag kick and the ball
bobbled around before finally falling into the
path of Dixon who blasted over from 12 yards
with the final kick of the match.
Full-time:
Washington 1v1 Marske United
Once again Marske
failed to make their dominance count and rued
several missed chances near the end as they
dropped another two points and slipped down to
sixth in the table.
