MATCH REPORT:
Whickham (Home): NL Div 2, 19th August
2009.
F/T : Won 2 - 0
Scorers: Jackson, Taylor
Marske welcomed
back Benn Thompson from suspension to partner
Craig Skelton up front, and with Stuart Jackson,
Andy Raw and Steve Cochrane all returning, we
fielded our strongest team of the season so far.
Whickham’s night
got off to a bit of a shocker as six of their
players somehow ended up in Catterick on their
way to the game. Not being able to spot the sea
aroused their suspicions that were heading in
the wrong direction, and when they started
driving past tanks they knew they had took a
wrong turn, eventually arriving at the GER
Stadium just 20 minutes before kick-off.
We made a slow
tempo start to the game but looked much more
confident at the back with Ross Diamond and Andy
Raw back amongst the defence.
Andy Swalwell had a
shot easily saved by Whickham keeper Stephen
Robinson on six minutes before we took the lead
10 minutes later.
A good free kick
into the box from Steve Cochrane was headed in
by Stuart Jackson to score his first goal for
the club. With Talla, Benn and Jacko all in the
box for the set piece, they Whickham defence
didn’t know who to mark.
Cochrane skied a
free kick over from a central position on 25
minutes before a good passing build up set up
Swalwell from 25 yards but he struck his low
shot wide.
We were enjoying a
really good spell of pressure and almost doubled
our lead on 29 minutes. Benn Thompson headed a
cross towards goal from six yards out that Chris
Douglas handled on the line, but the referee was
apparently unsighted.
It was one-way
traffic as Thompson came close again on 32
minutes with another header, this time being
caught by Robinson.
Scott Wilson was
lucky to remain on the field with 38 minutes
gone as he swung his elbow straight into the
face of Craig Skelton, but the referee again
failed to see it.
Despite the
constant pressure we failed to extend our lead
further, Skelton shooting over from 12 yards
just before the interval.
Half-time: Marske
United 1v0 Whickham
Whickham had their
first chance at goal two minutes into the second
half as Scott Palmer took the ball down well but
struck a weak shot straight at Brendan Ledgeway.
We thought we had
scored a second on 48 minutes but had it ruled
out for offside. Skelton and Gamble combined
well down the left hand side and Gamble’s cross
was struck against the post by Derek Bradley
with Swalwell tapping in the rebound.
Whickham also had a
goal ruled out on 61 minutes. A flowing move
forward ended with Scott Swanston flicking the
ball in from an offside position, right in front
of Ledgeway.
Jackson
almost scored a second on 69 minutes, forcing
Robinson into a fine save, tipping Jacko’s
header over the bar for another corner.
From the second
flag kick, Mark Taylor was on hand to head home
our second from six yards and finally put the
game to bed.
Benn Thompson beat
Robinson to a great through ball from Adam Blair
on 87 minutes but scuffed his shot, then two
minutes later he was through again, hustling his
way past the last defender before forcing a good
save out of the visiting keeper.
We played out time
with Josh Myers, Swalwell and Bradley playing
keep-ball with some excellent triangulated
passing.
