MATCH REPORT:
Whitehaven (Home): NL Div 2, 12th September
2009.
F/T 2-2 (D)
Scorers: Cochrane, Chillingsworth
Burto opted to keep
the same side that demolished Jarrow Roofing a
week earlier. The only enforced change was
replacing Owen Dixon who was ill. Rob Jones
replaced Dixon on the left flank, having signed
four days earlier after scoring five times in a
friendly with Nunthorpe Athletic.
We started well,
Jones straight away winning a free kick which
Steve Cochrane floated into the box. The ball
found its way to Stuart Jackson who saw his
effort cleared off the line by a defender.

Whitehaven broke
straight down the other end and won a corner
from which David Dustin scored with an easy tap
in after we failed to deal with it.
The previous weeks
game between second and fourth place started off
very cagey, but this weeks game of third versus
fourth was the total opposite as both teams were
intent on attacking from the off.
Carl Chillingsworth
came close to equalising on four minutes,
drilling the ball just wide with Jack Fryer
beaten, then with ten minutes gone he headed
just over after good work from Adam Blair.
The bright start to
the game lost its sparkle over the next 20
minutes as the referee was forced to deal with
frequent time wasting from the Cumbrian’s as
they regularly took as much time as they could
to take each dead ball kick.
A good build up and
quick run forward from Jones on 38 minutes saw
Cochrane slide into the box but agonisingly
missed connecting with the wingers cross by a
matter of inches.
As they had done in
the first minute, Whitehaven caught us on the
break shortly before half time. Dustin broke
clear of the defence but fired over from the
edge of the box.
Half-time: Marske
United 0v1 Whitehaven
We made an
excellent start to the second half, equalising
within 90 seconds. Cochrane turned and shot
past Fryer from 18 yards to register his first
goal since January at VCD Athletic.

We led after 49
minutes when Chillingsworth scored his usual
goal after bundling the ball over the line from
close range.
Jones got forward
on 55 minutes and found Cochrane in space but
his shot was directed straight at Fryer.
A good move two
minutes later saw Blair combine with
Chillingsworth to set up Josh Myers, but the
youngster shot wide from the outside the box.
It was one way
traffic in the blazing sunshine as Jones was the
next player to have a go at goal, blazing a shot
over the bar from the right hand side of the
box.
Whitehaven’s first
chance of the second half didn’t arrive until
the 68th minute as substitute Mike
Farrer worked his way into space but lashed a
blistering wide of the goal from 15 yards.
An interesting
change in personnel saw Burto replace the lively
Jones with Ross Diamond for the final 20
minutes.
Darren Donald must
have thought he’d scored on 77 minutes as he hit
a tremendous shot towards goal but Brendan
Ledgeway dived full stretch to get a hand to hit
and force it round the post.
We had two more
chances to put the game to bed in the final ten
minutes. Chillingsworth turned well before
shooting wide on 81 minutes, then Shane Erskine
fired straight at the keeper in the final
minute.
We were made to pay
for not killing them off when Stephen Hewitt
scored their equalising goal deep into stoppage
time. After not clearing the ball properly from
a free kick, Hewitt wrong footed Ledgeway with a
tap in from six yards.
