MATCH REPORT:
Whitehawk (Home): FA Vase Replay, 13th February
2010.
F/T 2-3 (L)
Skelton (pen), Jones
Last season, Marske
United reached the quarter-finals of the FA
Carlsberg Vase, but it was not to be this time.
Despite
fighting back after conceding two goals, they
ended heartbroken as Whitehawk clinched the
fifth round replay with a late winner.
Marske manager Paul
Burton was devastated after the final whistle,
feeling his sides comeback had put them in the
driving seat.
He said: “I thought
we were magnificent in the second half, which I
started with Michael Waller as an extra striker.
“We were unfortunate
to concede a second goal, but really there was
only one team in it and when we got back to 2-2
I thought there was no way they would go
through.
“But they
hit us with a third goal and although we pressed
relentlessly in the last 10 minutes, an
equaliser just would not come.”
Last week, Whitehawk
were first to strike in their own backyard and
they were quickly out of the traps this time.
After just three
minutes Sam Crabb crossed and Danny Davis
comfortably beat Brendan Ledgeway from close
range.
Danny Brunskill had
a chance to level and Andy Raw forced a good
save from goalkeeper Lloyd Anderson.
Although there was
little between the side in the opening half,
Marske created the better chances and on the
stroke of half time they almost took the lead
when Josh Myers’ shot was cleared off the line
by Sam Frisk.

United 0 v 1 Whitehawk
Tommy Raw was
one-on-one with the goalkeeper but Anderson came
to Whitehawk’s aid before the visitors went two
up on 70 minutes.
Justin Harris split
the home defence and although Ledgeway managed
to smother Darren Budd’s shot, the ball
rebounded to him and he gleefully accepted the
opportunity.
Marske, urged on
bytheir supporters in a crowd of 425, deservedly
reduced the deficit 13 minutes from time. Rob
Jones was upended by Stuart
Holmes and Craig
Skelton confidently converted the penalty.
The Seasiders were
now on the rampage and two minutes later Dominic
Gamble went on a mazey run down the left and
crossed for Jones to fire in the equaliser.
Marske’s joy though
lasted only a minute. A good kick by keeper
Anderson found Darren Freeman and his header
gave Ledgeway no chance for what proved to be
the winning goal.
The home side
stepped up the pressure but Whitehawk held on
for a trip to Gresley in the quarter-finals.
Full-time: Marske
United 2 v 3 Whitehawk
“There’s no doubt
that they were panicking even when they went two
goals up,” added Burton.
“It was no more than
we deserved to get back into the match, but at
the end of the day, they scored three goals away
from home and you can’t take that away from
them.
“We are devastated,
but wish Whitehawk all the best in the last
eight.”
